TRANSITION TO
SECONDARY COLLEGE

Year 6 – Secondary College Transition

The transition from primary to secondary school is an exciting time for students and their parents. It is the next stage in a lifelong educational journey leading to new experiences and challenges. After the relatively familiar surroundings of primary school, it can be daunting moving to a secondary school where there are so many new experiences to navigate.

Mahogany Rise Primary School has many initiatives in place to ensure the transition to secondary school is a positive experience for our students and their parents.

Secondary School Visits
Each child in Grade 3, 4, 5 and 6 visit the local secondary school, Monterey Secondary College, every fortnight for a Science lesson. This helps students to feel comfortable with teachers, the school and the overall environment of high school.

As part of the transition from Year 6 to Year 7, students attending secondary schools participate in an Orientation Day, often the second Tuesday in December. This may include a school tour, meeting fellow students and teachers, and taking part in special lessons and activities.

We also welcome many secondary school teachers and past students to come and visit our Grade 6 students and their teachers for a range of programs and talks.

Student Forum
We have several past students from Monterey Secondary College participate in an open forum morning. It is at this forum that our current grade sixes ask questions and hear of the challenges and positive experiences of their peers.
Teacher Collaboration
We collaborate with teachers ad coordinators at Monterey Secondary College to ease the students through the transition period.

Student Wellbeing Program
All of this is underpinned by our strong commitment to Student Wellbeing. The entire learning program advocates the development of children’s ability to express and overcome fears, build self-confidence and personal leadership skills.

How Parents can Help their Children's Transition:

Leaving primary school can be exciting and daunting, and there are ways parents can help make this move as smooth as possible. For tips on how to best prepare your child for secondary school, visit http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/parents/secondary/Pages/starting.aspx

Parents can assist with preparing for the transition from primary to secondary school by helping their child become increasingly self-reliant while in upper primary school. Slowly increase the child’s responsibility for completing homework and other tasks, caring for their school belongings, and getting to school and classes on time.
The formal side of transition begins in early Term 2 where students and parents are able to attend Open Nights at local Secondary Colleges and choose what school will be the best for their child. Parents will then be asked to fill out a transition form that needs to be handed back to the Primary School for processing by the due date.
